11 UMass Boston Students Receive the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, providing them with skills critical to our national security and economic prosperity. To be eligible for the Gilman Program, applicants must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program or internship. The Institute of International Education has administered the program since its inception in 2001.

We are excited to announce we have had a record number of applicants this application cycle at UMass Boston, and have 11 students who were selected for scholarships for the upcoming 2024 terms. Congratulations to these students who applied to study abroad during the Winter, Spring, Summer, & Fall in Germany, Italy, Jordan, New Zealand, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, The Netherlands, and Turkey!

The October 2023 cycle Gilman Scholars are:

Frances Adams

My name is Frances Adams and I am a senior nursing major. I’m super grateful and blessed to be a recipient of the Gilman Scholarship and I am looking forward to studying abroad for the first time this winter in Germany!!

Fatima Akter

My name is Fatima Akter and my major is International Relations. I will be studying in Amman, Jordan with SIT in Fall 2024. I decided to go to Jordan to develop my Arabic skills that I have worked on in college. As a first-generation student, this will be my first time studying away from home and I’m hoping to learn and grow as an individual through this experience.

Analee Deprince

Hello, my name is Aanchal-Annalee Deprince, and I am pursuing a bachelor’s in international relations and my goal is to be a Foreign Service Officer. Knowing that my path to that career field starts here, I am very excited to start my journey as an Exchange student at the University of Mannheim in Germany. I came to the United States at the age of 15 in July 15 of 2015. I graduated from Medford High School in 2019 and I have an associate degree in Political Science from Bunker Hill Community College, a Global Leadership Certificate degree from Apollo University, a certificate in Filmmaking and a diploma in Women Professional Modeling. I am also a Commonwealth Honors graduate and Scholars from Bunker Hill Community College. Knowing my background, I would never think that I could make certain alleys of life. I am very happy to be a new Gilman Scholar and will use this opportunity to empower others.

Sarah Ikram

My name is Sarah Tahir Ikram and I am currently in my second year as a Nursing major. I will be studying at Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) in Seoul, South Korea for the entirety of the Spring ’24 semester. I am excited to immerse myself in a different culture and represent UMass Boston as an exemplary global citizen. I plan on taking part in several different activities and extracurriculars to pick up on as many parts of Korean culture as I can. Additionally, I plan on recognizing the attitudes towards healthcare and medicine in general during my exchange program, bringing back what I’ve learned to the classrooms at UMass Boston, and integrating positive approaches into my future career.

Evan McIntrye

I’m Evan McIntyre, and there’s a possibility I’ll be heading to Stellenbosch, Africa, in the summer of ’24. I’m thrilled about the prospect of delving into Nelson Mandela’s history, possibly visiting the prison where he fought for democracy. Africa has always been a dream destination for me, and I’m especially excited about the chance to go on a safari. As a wildlife enthusiast, encountering a giraffe, lion, or hippo up close would be a dream come true! A big thank you to the UMass Boston Global Study Abroad Department for their assistance with the paperwork, and to Gilman for making this dream a reality.

Sarah Oliveira

Hi, I’m Sarah Oliveira, a 2023 Gilman scholarship recipient! I have the privilege of studying abroad this 2023–2024 spring semester in Florence, Italy. I’ve always dreamed of visiting Italy, as I’ve always had a passion for history, classic literature, and ancient art. I am extremely excited to be able to travel this spring to Italy and learn more about my passions. I encourage anyone curious about traveling the world to consider studying abroad. I believe this is going to be a truly life-changing experience, and I can’t wait!
